Zambra
Where Andalusian Meets Middle Eastern
A thrilling workshop blending Flamenco with Raks Sharqi, Master Teacher,
Mariano Parra, brings flamenco flavor to middle eastern dance. Inspired
by Zambra dancers of the 1900’s who embellished their Spanish dance
with tarot cards, tambourines and zills to create characterization, Mariano
puts Moro back into middle eastern.
This fusion workshop will involve cross-over dance movements: use of fan
and use of veil as flamenco manton (shawl). Concentration will be on rhythms,
flamenco Moro movement phrases tailored to fit into the classic 2/4 time
of middle eastern music. Emphasis will be on: floor design of the dance
on stage; air design - pictures shaped by angles of arm, head, neck and
hands; dancing on the diagonal and three dimensional planes versus flat
two dimensional planes; phrasing of steps into seamless movement sequences;
se of breath and the drama of empty space. Mariano invites the dancer
to appreciate the theatrical possibilities of "empty space".
Recalling the dances of mentor La Meri, Mariano hares, "she always
had spaces in her dances for emotional improvisation." Mariano's
choreographic phrases will provide the space, structure and patterns that
"leave room musically --- to respond emotionally on the breath."
MUWASHAH and MOVEMENT:
Arabo-Andalusian Rhythms and Melody for Raqs Sharqi with percussionist,
musician and folk dancer KARIM NAGI
An intense and creativity-expanding workshop, Karim Nagi unveils the tradition
of Arabo-Andalusian music for the dancer. The Muwashah is a beautiful
song genre composed of Arabic poetry written in the Andalusian period
of 890-1492AD by Arab residents of Spain. The Advanced Rhythms are elaborate
and rich, ranging from 2 to 32 beats. The melodies are powerful and deep,
utilizing all the colors and modulations of the Arabic Maqam music system.
Rhythm by rhythm, song by song, Karim will teach the dancer how to hear,
interpret, and move to each Muwashah. Dancers will clap and speak each
rhythm, vocalize each maqam and melody, and create choreography fragments
for future use with other genres. These rhythms and melodies are richer
and more expressive than most contemporary music, yet they are the chronological
foundation for modern Middle Eastern music, as well a Spanish Flamenco.
They will inspire a new level of intellect and emotion, yielding a transcendental
dance expression. The workshop will have live percussion and music.
Karim Nagi is an accomplished performer and teacher of Arabic music and
dance.
A native Egyptian, with superior English verbal skills, Karim has trained
